Health and safety

General Health

The health and safety of our communities is our priority. With the evolving circumstances around the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), it is imperative BRT clients and BRT professionals are informed about the best practices to protect themselves and others when interacting.

According to the Health Canada and provincial health officials, if someone has been diagnosed with COVID-19, suspect they may have it, or are being evaluated for it they should refrain from coming into contact with others and quarantine for 14 days.

Federal, provincial, and other health authorities revise guidelines in response to the changing landscape of this novel coronavirus.

We (BRT) continue to monitor these directives and make updates based on official guidance from governing health authorities.

General Safety

Your personal safety is of utmost importance. Connecting professionals with clients is an exciting event, but people should always be cautious when interacting with individuals they don’t know.

Use your best judgment and put your safety first, whether you are exchanging initial messages or meeting in person.

While you can’t control the actions of others, there are things you can do to help you stay safe during your interaction.

I. In Person Meetings

When agreeing to meet in person, use common sense, avoid late night meetings, isolated places and being alone.

We suggest the following:

Meet in Public and Stay in Public

  • Public places offer added security. Meet in a populated, public place;
  • If meeting at your home or any other private location, ensure you are not alone; and
  • Refuse to meet at a private location by yourself and find another professional.

Tell Someone Your Plans

  • Tell a friend or family member your plans;
  • Let someone know the details of when, where, with whom, and the person’s phone number before going; and
  • Have your mobile phone charged and with you at all times.

Have Your Own Transportation

  • You should be in control of how you get to and from your meeting;
  • You should be able to leave whenever you want;
  • We suggest you have a ride-share app or a friend to pick you up even if you have your own vehicle, in case it breaks down; and
  • Know bus routes or taxi company contact number for added mobility confidence.

II. Virtual/Remote Meetings

When meeting over the internet, we recommend the use of Signal ™.

Additionally, ensure you verify the identity of the individual with whom you are meeting at the onset of the meeting. If at any time you are unsure of the identity of the person, feel free to end the meeting and find another way to meet.

Limit the information you share to what is essential for the provision/receipt of professional services.

Never share personal information, such as your social insurance number, home or work address, or details about your daily routine (e.g., that you go to a certain gym every Monday) with people you don’t know. Avoid sharing details about your personal life, including your spouse’s name, your children’s names, where they work/go to school etcetera.
